靠干擾核糖體功能阻斷多肽合成。不是常用的標準抗生素，常用于選擇新霉素抗藥基因轉染的原核和真核細胞。 在基因轉移、基因敲除、抗性篩選以及轉基因動物等方面得以廣泛應用。
